TeachAI: A Collaborative Initiative Shaping the Future of AI in Education

In May 2023, TeachAI was launched to provide guidance and thought leadership for education leaders on how to teach with and about artificial intelligence (AI). In just over a year, TeachAI has grown into the world's largest AI in education movement, powered by over 100 advisory committee organizations, 44 state education agencies in the US, and 33  ministries of education and agencies from around the world. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to uplifting education goals while examining technology's role in enhancing learning experiences.

As AI evolves, TeachAI connects education leaders with the resources and recommendations needed to navigate this transformation. This progress has only been possible through the efforts of hundreds of education leaders and organizations, all working to ensure that student and educator goals are central as they address AI in educational environments.

A Year of Resources Through  Collective Effort

TeachAI is the result of community collaboration. Since its inception, educators, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the globe have come together to co-create meaningful resources. Every resource created through TeachAI reflects a broad spectrum of perspectives and expertise. We have hosted focus groups, working groups, expert discussions, and webinars, providing a space for sharing knowledge and advancing education through AI responsibly.

In one year, the TeachAI initiative launched three impactful resources. The AI Guidance for Schools Toolkit has been accessed by thousands of educators. It has inspired the development and analyses of AI guidance in schools globally, including over 20 states in the US. Karen Leonard from the Oklahoma State Department of Education highlighted the Toolkit's practical utility: "I love the resources posted in the toolkit; everything there can be reused and modified to fit individual states or nations." The Toolkit, like other TeachAI resources, prioritizes adaptability across various sectors of education and beyond.

Another milestone is the publication of the Foundational Policy Ideas for AI in Education. The policy resources, endorsed by over 50 organizations with input from over 20 others,  help education systems create the enabling conditions to address AI in teaching and learning responsibly. Nicolas Cataldo Astorga, Minister of Education of Chile, affirms the importance of such efforts: "As educational systems, we must act swiftly to address a world where artificial intelligence is rapidly emerging. For public policy, this entails collaborating with communities, particularly educators, to creatively, critically, and safely harness these tools for learning, equity, and inclusion." This underscores a commitment to shaping an inclusive and forward-looking educational landscape in the age of AI.

Most recently, TeachAI, in partnership with the Computer Science Teachers Association, launched the Guidance on the Future of Computer Science Education in an Age of AI, which addresses critical questions facing the CS education community while providing an example for other disciplines to consider. Over 40 computer science education providers and curriculum developers have engaged with the resources. Dr. Jackie Blizzard-Caron, VP of Education at Girls Who Code, noted, "The Guidance provides helpful insights and practical recommendations for educators, administrators, and curriculum providers navigating the complexities of AI in CS education. As an organization committed to closing the gender gap and ensuring that all communities are provided with meaningful opportunities to engage with emerging technologies, we highly recommend it to other organizations seeking to develop and implement a curriculum that effectively and responsibly integrates AI concepts and tools into teaching and learning."

Next from TeachAI: Building AI Literacy

TeachAI is now embarking on an AI literacy project, which will bring together education leaders and organizations to guide the global education community in understanding the skills and knowledge students will need in an AI-driven future.

TeachAI's success is a testament to the power of collaboration. From educators to industry leaders, we have built a community that fosters learning, innovation, and the responsible use of AI in education. We are grateful to the TeachAI steering committee organizations - Code.org, ETS, the International Society for Technology in Education, Khan Academy, and the World Economic Forum—for leading this initiative. Equally, we sincerely thank our advisory committee partners and participating government agencies, whose contributions have been crucial in advancing our goals. Additionally, we appreciate the generosity and engagement of TeachAI's donors—the Adobe Foundation, Cognizant Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the EY Organization, Infosys Foundation USA, and Microsoft—who have provided expert insights through their active participation in the advisory committee and working groups.

As AI becomes an increasingly integral part of our world, the TeachAI initiative and its community and partners are poised to continue supporting education systems to navigate and shape AI’s role in education.
